1. You should recognize familiar words in our language
e.g: beat is the same word in russian, only we pronounce t more palatalized (бить)
2. You should recognize familiar morphemes in our language
e.g: re- in russian is pere (пере - you see, the letter you use for p we use for r. so it's as if pere is kind of bilingua)
3. You should recognize that we all speak the same language, only in different dialects
e.g: as adjectives in french is usually used not before noun, but after it, we use that "to" particible as a suffix: to be = bytt (быть) to do = deyatt, delatt (деять, делать), to sit = sidett (сидеть), to squeal = skulitt (скулить) and so on.

That's a pretty good starting point actually. And it's totally correct: it's pretty easy to read Russian once you know all the letters and phonems. After that you should leard some basic russian words and start basic grammar: you should learn the declension and conjurgation.
I'm not expectiong anyone to master it's usage quickly, but you should be able to understand which word refer to which when reading simple russian sentence. And now you can read! Awesome.
Now you should read in Russian, learn new words, improve your grammar and so one. Unfortunatelly, I don't know any books to recommend for starters. At least, don't try Dostoevsky or Tolstoy. Maybe, Pushkin's or Esenin's poetry will be ok.
You can easily find russian movies and cartoons with english subtitles online - there are plenty of them even on youtube. Mosfilm and some other companies share them freely. However, as I understand, there are problems with russian subtitles.
Btw, there is a subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/russian/ for people learning Russian.

Thank you for kind of proving my point.
The point is you don't start with words you could do without, you begin with simple words, you recognize them whether as parts of borrowings or in original words of similar meaning and sound (chances are they're the same, but you could care less) so when you reach that ugly level of lexics, you can dismember that word into morphemes you already know. Or you may just memorize it, sure thing.

BG #35 #17840
>>17839
Yoruba is among my favorite languages but nah, it woudn't stand a chance; some Bantu language (which one is the most widespread?) would be more plausible for non-Arabic Africa.

Your spoiler: yeah, I never post in sober condition
RU #36 #17842
>>17840
Bantu are not as similar as one might think btw.
They have extremely similar grammar up to the point of almost the same class prefixes in Kinyarwanda, Kimbundu and Swahili which are divided by more than thousand of kms.
But you hardly find two tribes with at least 30% coincidences in Swadesh list not to speak of any similarities in Shona and Xhosa.

My explanation:
1. too dumb to remember any word for more than a decade
1. too dumb to detect that their languages have grammar and it might be forgotten as well
BG #37 #17844
>>17842
Yeah, well, the taxonomy of the languages in Sub-Saharan Africa leaves a lot to be desired, they were simply never studied thoroughly - a lot of the subdivisions within the Bantu clusterfuck of a family are just temporary hypotheses.

About that last part: eerm, that's some racist shit. Applied to the Germanics, for example, it turns out they're dumb as fuck: they can't agree how to call a toad, lol. Pretty much every language uses a different word.

Hmm, the Proto-Slavic word for mute also meant dumb...
BG #41 #17855
>>17853
Precisely, (Balto-Slavic)mēmas > (early Proto-Slavic)nēmas (with dissimilation) > němŭ (Common Slavic)
And judging from the reflexes, it meant both mute and dumb.
BG #42 #17856
>>17855
I mean, this is extrapolation, of course, but for Proto-Slavs the relation between can't speak properly - is stupid was most likely familiar enough to produce the respective connotations in daughter languages

1. For grammar rules - look for something like 'getting ready for ЕГЭ'
ЕГЭ is a main exam for schools, so all rules might be covered
2. Then, if you like anime, you can watch it with both sub and dub :D We have a lot of this shit.
3. Finally, easy rule(language basic) to know is that we don't have auxiliaries and you can connect words easily:
You can say - Ты(you) пидор(faggot) - You are faggot

Nice remark.

Nevertheless oxygen and hydrogen phonemes sounds terrible in Russian and their names just translation (oxidate and water). And Azot is a Greece word, proposed by Lavoisier which is used in another languages (French, Turkey).

In its turn Sodium and Potassium sounds like redneck slang of handicraft industry instead of proper chemistry terms.
