In the US most people past the age of 25 just pay for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. I haven’t torrented anything since 2012. The risks became too high, even to the point that I didn’t feel like blocklists mitigated it enough.

But if you have a buddy with a bunch of BDs of course you can ask him if you can come over and rip his shit to HDD. He’s not going to call the cops (and they wouldn’t do anything).

But at my age (mid-30s) I just don’t have the patience to maintain a bootleg collection or media server, troubleshooting things so I can watch something fancy on my set-top box. My time is valuable enough that I’d use more than the cost of a subscription service per month maintaining it. I’d rather work that time.

Either way my other points stand. Time has a dollar value. If I’m spending more in time per month than the cost of Netflix to search for content, maintain the system for viewing my shit on TV, and keeping myself from getting busted... it just doesn’t make good economic sense.

Yes, it was probably worthwhile when I was in my teens and early 20s and my time wasn’t worth much. But now? I’ll just take my AppleTV and Netflix subscription and watch it now.
